My approach to directing compares best to photography. I want to move audiences emotionally with compelling images and atmospheres. That way, I engage them into the theme of the film, drag them away from reality and get my story told with the highest possible impact.
As a perfectionist technical geek, I come to a filmset well prepared. I'm on top of every choice that influences the picture we're composing. I know my way around cameras and lenses. I know exactly how and where a certain shot will be used in the edit.
And that's convenient, 'cause I'll always be editing it afterwards as well.
Let's start with a confession, I don't emphasize as much on stories as most other directors do. Instead my approach is much more comparable to photography. I want to move audiences emotionally with compelling images and atmospheres. That way, I will engage them into the theme of the film and drag them away from reality.
